Eliška Stejskalová has been continuously interested in topics connected to the appearance of perception. Often, she develops the contradictions and conflicts of its various shapes and forms. One of her examined subjects is the process and state of sleep denial. The results of this exploration are shown in a conceptually designed exhibition in which she interrogates the possibilities of spontaneous unsophisticated perception.
The artist’s personal psychophysical experience allows her to define several elemental motifs, one of which is the viewer being confronted with visual representations based on her subjective imagination. The changes of perception and the arising satisfaction or deprivation enable us to experience specific visual qualities, which Stejskalová is trying to subjectively depict, while being aware of the impossibility of a universally objective representation of an experience. In the artist’s approach these examinations could be understood as a polemic as well as an attempt to confront the viewer’s conventional attitude towards the seen, which is determined by the inner movements of our sociocultural environment.
Eliška Stejskalová (1991), studied photography at FAMU in Prague from 2011 to 2014, and at the Royal College of Art in London from 2015 to 2017. She lives in Prague.
