Does the tree play an important role in the cultural history of mankind? It certainly does. The tree resembles us in many aspects; we can easily relate to it and harmonise with it. We often bestow our human qualities, feelings, and motives on it or compare ourselves to it. This is materialised in paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures, and architecture, which provide evidence of the extent to which man identifies himself with the shapes of nature and the extent to which he becomes its face. The entire history of the human–tree relationship is anchored in art. The tree should thus be understood as an impulse to the symbolical interpretation of nature and as a continuous inspiration of new forms.

Like hardly any other natural element, the tree has been, and still is, an exceptional motif in art history. It triggers our imagination while being an irreplaceable source of livelihood and material. From the earliest cave paintings featuring fauna and flora that no longer exist to the current artistic presentation of environmental themes, we have been dealing with questions about the origin of what we call nature and being, as well as concerns about the sustainability of life as we know it. As a result, the disproportionately low attention paid to this essential subject of art history in exhibitions and research is rather striking.

The GROW project at the Belvedere Gallery in Vienna has planted the tree in the centre of our attention with great success. The South Bohemian Gallery has developed it and has let it grow in the unique exhibition Let It GROW Again! which deepens our understanding of the relationship between art and ecology while bringing new perspectives for the preservation of natural and cultural values into our society. Join us and share your passion for art and nature, as we can achieve much more together.
